Bill Anderson

Owner | Bill Anderson Art Gallery

Art has long been a staple of Bill Anderson’s life. Inspired at a young age by his grandfather, Oscar H. Anderson, an artist himself, he pursued it during his college years, earning a Bachelor of Science from Mankato State University—now Minnesota State University, Mankato—in 1963. He launched his teaching career that year, leading an art class at Long Beach Unified School District throughout the decade. In 1969, he accepted a position in art education at the Appleton West High School in Wisconsin, where he found success from 1969 to 1973. Between 1973 and 2002, he subsequently taught art at Anaheim Union High School—from which he was named as Outstanding Teacher of the Year twice—Los Alamitos Unified School District, Orange County School of the Arts, and East Los Angeles College, where he also served as a muralist.

An accomplished artist in his own right, with solo and group exhibitions worldwide—including France, Italy, Japan, and Mexico—Mr. Anderson has owned and operated the Bill Anderson Art Gallery since 1994. Prolific across several decades, primarily in watercolor, sculpture, and printmaking, he’s been incredibly proud of his art that expresses time periods, locations, attitudes, and individuality. He’s illustrated several books, including “The Rebel Reverend: American Revolution Hero,” “Old West Christmas: Tales With A Twist,” and “Gold Rush Glimpses,” among several others; published his own books, including “Rediscovering the History & Beauty of Greece,” “The Complete Graphic Works of Bill Anderson: 1961 to 2008,” “Huntington Beach: Through the Eyes of Artist Bill Anderson,” “Queen Mary to the Glass Church: Through the Eyes of Bill Anderson,” and “Still Lifes Through the Eyes of Bill Anderson.”

In addition, Mr. Anderson has been active as the president of the Allied Arts Board of the City of Huntington Beach in California, where he was also recognized as an Outstanding Artist of the Year in 1986.  Looking toward the future, he passionately believes every student should have to experience the visual arts in elementary and secondary school; “art education,” he said, “is an important part of education.” He is also concerned about the negative effect that technology has had on the human, unique individuality of art.

Personally, he plans to continue his work in his art studio and gallery, as well as write two more books.
